Mahendra's Story

A True Patient Story Told by Mahendra and His Wife Ellen

mahandra.bmp“Mahendra wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary. He was just mowing the lawn when he started getting out of breath. He kept having to take breaks.” ~ Ellen

“I knew something was wrong, so I went to see my doctor. He took an EKG, which came back normal, but I still didn’t feel right. He referred me to Dr. Beattie, a cardiologist.” ~ Mahendra

“We went to see Dr. Beattie the next day. While we were in the waiting room, Mahendra began having chest pains. It was really scary. Dr. Beattie was sure he had a blockage of some kind building up in his heart.” ~ Ellen

“Before we could do anything, Dr. Beattie had to find out for sure. He performed a nuclear stress test to track my heart rate while I walked on a treadmill. During the test – I was so out of breath – we were all surprised when everything came back normal.” ~ Mahendra

“Dr. Beattie was still confident there was a blockage. He decided to give Mahendra a cardiac catheterization. Mahendra was so worried because it was an invasive procedure. But after it was all over, he said he didn’t feel a thing!” ~ Ellen

“I knew I could trust Dr. Beattie. He was right. All three of my main arteries were severely blocked. It turns out I needed a quadruple bypass. He recommended I have it done right away.” ~ Mahendra

“After surgery, I was concerned about Mahendra getting back to himself. He was never health conscious before, and I knew that would have to change. But Dr. Beattie enrolled him in a cardiac rehabilitation program at University Medical Center at Princeton that was just amazing.” ~ Ellen

“The nurses were so knowledgeable. They were familiar with all the details of my situation, including a special skin condition I had as a result of my surgery. They gave me so much attention.” ~ Mahendra

“His exercise sessions were all one-on-one – going at his pace until he built up his strength. And everything he learned about nutrition – he still uses today. He has even taught me how to be healthier.” ~ Ellen

“That program changed my outlook. Since then, I’ve made exercise a part of my life. I walk on my treadmill everyday, and monitor my heart rate daily. I really think Dr. Beattie would be very proud.” ~ Mahendra

“Dr. Beattie took good care of Mahendra. He was with us from diagnosis to recovery. There is no doubt in my mind that we had his undivided – and unconditional – attention.” ~ Ellen

“If it wasn’t for Dr. Beattie, and the fact that he was so involved, I don’t think I would be among the living today.” ~ Mahendra

University Medical Center at Princeton is not licensed for cardiac surgery. This cardiac bypass surgery was performed at a tertiary hospital.
