Acute Rehabilitation Unit

When you or a loved one is recovering from a serious injury or illness, you need specialized therapy to help you regain function and ease the transition back to home.  The University Medical Center at Princeton (UMCP) Acute Rehabilitation Unit is committed to helping you recover from physical disabilities so that you can resume your activities as quickly as possible.

We care for individuals with disabilities resulting from:

  • Strokes
  • Craniotomies
  • Neurological conditions
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Complex joint replacements, including bilateral knee and hip replacements
  • Debilitating rheumatoid arthritis
  • Amputations
  • Fractured Hip
  • Major Multiple Trauma

There are many benefits to choosing UMCP's Acute Rehabilitation Unit:

Located in a leading acute care hospital

Our acute rehabilitation unit is located on the second floor of University Medical Center at Princeton, a leading teaching hospital and state-designated Primary Stroke Center. In a state-of-the-art acute care setting, patients have convenient access to other important clinical services on site. These include 24/7 respiratory therapy and a rapid response team of physicians, nurses and other clinicians who have been specially trained to diagnose and treat emerging and acute clinical issues. There is a physician on site 24/7 who can respond to your needs.

Should you require emergent acute hospitalization, you are already in the facility that you need, instead of waiting for an ambulance to pick you up and transport you across town.

Active, involved medical leadership

The Medical Director is a physiatrist, a physician who is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation. She leads the rehabilitation team of professionals while a board certified internist manages your medical conditions.

Excellent care

Each patient in our rehabilitation unit receives a personal evaluation and a comprehensive treatment plan. Treatment goals focus on measurable improvements and the return of vital functions such as balance, mobility, cognition, speech and memory.  Patients receive care in an on-site gym and practice life skills in a variety of home-like and public settings. Patient and family education that includes print materials and Internet resources are also important components of patient care.

Interdisciplinary treatment

The members of our interdisciplinary rehabilitation team are highly involved in each individual's treatment.

  • Physicians with board certification in physical medicine and rehabilitation
  • Physicians with board certification in internal medicine
  • Physical, occupational and speech therapists
  • Rehabilitation nurses
  • Registered dieticians
  • Licensed clinical social workers

National accreditation for excellence

The University Medical Center at Princeton Acute Rehabilitation Unit has been awarded the highest level of accreditation possible by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), an international organization dedicated to promoting quality, value and optimal outcomes.  It is the only CARF-accredited acute rehabilitation unit in Mercer County. For more information about CARF, click here.

Continuity of care

If you or a loved one is a patient at University Medical Center at Princeton, our physicians and staff will have direct, computerized access to your hospital medical records. This helps to ensure a smooth transition from one level of care to the next. Your physician who cared for you at UMCP is welcome to follow and treat you on our Acute Rehabilitation Unit as a consultant. When you come to UMCP's Acute Rehabilitation Unit from another hospital, the physicians and staff at UMCP are committed to communicating with your personal physician about your care and progress throughout your stay and upon discharge.

Patient satisfaction is consistently high with ratings exceeding 90 percent.
